Artist Sheilah Rechtschaffer is presenting a continuing body of work at the Croton Free Library. Her focus continues as a visual artist and how she has integrated that experience with listening at the same time to jazz music. The paintings can be accessed through the process of QR Codes on smart phones. The works in the exhibition were made over the past year in watercolor, ink and pencil employ a visual vocabulary of color, form, and gesture that emulates jazz improvisation.
Each of the works on view relates to a specific jazz recording of musicians such as Miles Davis, Bill Evans, John Abercrombie, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett and many others.
In most of these paintings, Sheilah, who always listens to music in her studio, started by her drawing the lines of the musical staff. She then began her improvisational process. In Sheilah’s words “the sounds fill the air like a circle weaving in and out… the flicks of my brush floating over the movement of forms that are linear but keep repeating…on-going rhythmic shapes…” Of primary importance in these works is the color of sound translated into to the color of paint, two non-verbal art forms related to each other by the artist with color holding it all together.
Visitors to the gallery and visitors to Sheilah’s website (sheilahrechtschaffer.com) are encouraged to listen to the tunes that inspired the paintings. Every painting is annotated with the details of the recording that inspired it and most of the tunes are easily found on the internet. So by listening to the music that inspired Sheilah, the gallery visitor has a way to share her creative process. Of course, one can also listen in silence by listening with one’s eyes.
